南韓籍的聯合國秘書長潘基文卸任在即，外界認為他很可能回南韓參選總統。他20日再次向記者暗示自己有意參選。此外，他也稱祖國南韓近日揚的「閨密門」事件「令人汗顏」。
潘基文在紐約聯合國總部會見駐美南韓記者團時稱，「若我擔任聯合國秘書長10年裡的所見所聞能夠為韓國發展做出貢獻，我願意許身報國」。當記者詢問潘基文是否將競選下一任總統，他沒正面回答，上述發言被解讀為潘基文強烈暗示有意參選。
針對南韓總統朴槿惠遭彈劾、國民舉行燭光集會抗議等事件，潘基文指出，這表示國民對國政的缺失感到憤怒、失望，問題出在體制和領導力上。潘基文若投入總統選戰，據「Realmeter」月初民調，潘基文以18.8％支持率位居第二，僅次在野黨民主黨前黨魁文在寅的23.1％。
